Only He Can Satisfy

By Morgan Perry

Have you ever been so thirsty that you felt as if nothing could quench it? As I think about this question, little kids come to my mind. I worked at Beltway’s Summer Club, and the leadership team made plans for the kids to have a picnic outside. I thought the kids were going to be so excited, but to my surprise, they were miserable! During the picnic, one little boy walked up to me, dramatically sighs, and says, “It’s like a ba-zillion degrees out here, and I keep drinking water but I’m still thirsty!”

Now on a more serious matter, if you were offered a drink that would allow you to never be thirsty again, would you take a drink?

In John 4: 1-26, Jesus asks a Samaritan woman the same question.

If it were me in this situation, I would have said, “Heck ya, man!” But it wasn’t that easy! You see, Jesus was a Jew and she was a Samaritan. In society during this time, Jews and Samaritans hated each other. It’s just how normal life went. Jesus started by asking a simple question. “Will you give me a drink of water?” When Jesus asks this question, He defies all odds. He goes against what society has portrayed. By talking to the woman, He loves her for who she is in that moment. He doesn't love her for who others said she was, or how much she had sinned, but for her true self!! Jesus loves YOU in the same way! Raw, unconditional love comes from Him alone!

Later in the story, Jesus says, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” With that response, the woman says,“Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

When Jenna and I first began Riptide Ministries, we fell in love with the song lyrics by Tenth Avenue North,

“Come to the waters, you who thirst and you'll thirst no more. Come to the Father, you who work and you'll work no more. Come to the treasure, you who search and you'll search no more. Come to the lover, you who want and you'll want no more.”

As Christians, I think these words are so important! We often miss out on the true idea that WE, sinners, are loved by THE LOVING GOD. HE is constantly offering US a drink from HIS well! How crazy is that?!?!

So, looking at your life, do you drink of the world, or of Jesus?

If you drink of the world, you probably know by now, that you will never be fulfilled, right? So now is your chance, SAY YES TO JESUS! Drink from him. Let him fill you up. Let him love YOU in the midst of your brokenness. Let him be the thing you run to! He desires your true, raw, real, love. He desires YOU. You don’t have to keep running. Stop. He is here. He is alive. He is The Well. Let him fill you up! Be real with him. He can take it, I promise. He will never leave you, nor forsake you, but the world will over and over!
